S.E. Portland Rotary has long-standing local service projects! |
ABOUT THE PHOTO SHOW ABOVE -- TAKEN AUGUST 2, 2009 Southeast Portland Rotary each year is the organization entrusted with the scooping up and serving of the signature ice cream at the largest community event in Southeast Portland, "Sundae In The Park" in Sellwood Park, on the first Sunday of August each year, sponsored by SMILE -- the Sellwood-Moreland Improvement League neighborhood association -- and by the Portland Parks Department.
This year, the club was assisted by volunteers from the local Burmese community!
All proceeds from the sale of the 50-cent ice cream cones and sundaes are donated to the Thelma Skelton Loaves and Fishes Center, in the Brooklyn neighborhood -- the people who deliver "Meals On Wheels" (and the club has been helping do THAT for decades -- see below!). Southeast Portland Rotary Club members has been delivering "Meals On Wheels" for Loaves and Fishes for senior shut-ins for decades. We have been told that it's the longest-standing community service project of any Rotary Club in District 5100!

A newer club community service project has been cooking a meal a month for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House at Emmanual Hospital. This residence is specifically for the family of children undergoing treatment for major illness at the hospital. Needless to say, the personally-prepared meal which volunteers present in the evenings there means a lot to those staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
